Prepayment Meter FAQs

Search through some of the most commonly asked questions about prepayment meters.

A prepayment meter means you have to pay for your gas and electricity upfront. This works like a pay-as-you-go mobile phone; you have to top-up with credit to get your gas and electricity.

1. What should I do if I lose my code or card?

If you lose your electricity card, please contact Just Energy on 1850 858 110.

2. Does my meter have emergency credit, if so how much?

Yes. There is emergency credit of €5.00 for each fuel on the meter. If you use the emergency credit, you will need to top up more than €5.00 in order to restore supply to the property.

You can activate the emergency credit as follows:

• For Electricity – Press button 0.
• For Gas – Insert the card and press the red ‘A’ button.

3. If I run out of credit on a Friday, will I lose supply over the weekend?

You will not lose supply over the weekend for electricity; friendly time Credit will apply. There are certain times whereby if you run out of credit your meter will roll onto friendly time credit. This will mean you will continue to get supply until the ‘friendly time’ ends.

These times are as follows:

• After 4pm on weekdays (after 5pm in Summer)
• Weekends
• Bank Holidays

Please note, friendly time credit is for electricity only. Once you top up all charges accumulated in ‘friendly time’ will be deducted along with any applicable debt recovery.

1. Where can I top up my pre-payment meter?

You can top up your prepayment meter at any recognised Payzone outlets.

2. Do I need to ‘register’ my payment device before topping up?

When you first receive the key and/or card, insert it into the meter and wait for up to 1 minute before removing. You can now top up. You only need to do this one and not each time you top up the meter.

3. Can I transfer prepayment credit from my previous supplier to Just Energy?

No. Once you insert the Just Energy key or card into the meter, the tariff will be updated and any credit or debt will be wiped. If this has happened, please contact your previous supplier to request a refund.

4. What happens if my top up payment is not showing on my meter?

If the payment is not showing, check:

• Is the card clean?
• Did you use the emergency credit and need to cover the €5.00 shortfall?
• Is there debt on your meter?
• Is there is an error code?

If you are still experiencing problems:

• For Electricity Meters – Did the meter state the code was accepted when you entered it? If not, then please re-enter the code.
• For Gas Meters - Insert the card and press the red button. If it shows 0.00, then you will need to return to the outlet.

5. Can I get a statement to show the payments I have made?

You will receive an annual summary detailing all the payments you have made over the year, as well as the total change of supply cost for energy used during that period. If you have debt on your meter, you will receive a statement every 4 months.

6. Are there any additional charges?

A daily standing charge that includes a PSO levy for electric and carbon tax for gas, is applied to the meter, even if the property is empty. You will need to ensure that money is put on the key and/or card and inserted in the meter regularly to cover the standing charges so that you do not run out of power when you are on holiday, for example.

7. Is there a fee for moving the meter if I cannot access the meter?

2. What are the pros and cons of prepayment meters?

Advantages of prepayment meters include:
• Be in control of the energy you use.
• Prevent large, unexpected bills.
• Manage and reduce any energy debt you may have at the same time as you pay for the gas and electricity you use.

Disadvantages of prepayment meters include:
• You may pay more for your gas and electricity than if you had a credit meter tariff.
• The best energy deals on the market aren't available to prepayment meter customers, nor can they access our online or dual fuel discounts.
• You can only purchase credit at an approved vendor. Times and locations may vary.
• If you are not able to top up the electric key or gas token, there is a chance the meter will run out of credit and leave you with no electric or gas.

3. Can I change my meter from prepayment to credit?

Just Energy only exchanges prepayment meters to credit meters in certain circumstances. Please contact us on 1850 858 110, or +353 1 4311478 if you are calling from overseas, to find out whether you are eligible. Standard meter exchange fees will be charged.

4. I have just moved to a house with a prepayment meter. What do I do?

If you've moved to a new home which has a prepayment meter, it's vital that you register the meter with Just Energy or a different energy company as the new account holder. If you don't, you could end up paying the wrong rates as the previous occupier could be in debt to the energy supplier.
